Sleep Apnea Treatment
Sleep apnea is a potentially severe condition characterized by changes in your airway while sleeping. Commonly associated with snoring, sleep apnea causes a narrowing of the airway, resulting in limited airflow when you breathe, causing your soft tissue to vibrate (snoring) or your airway to collapse, which prevents you from breathing properly.
This occurs throughout your sleep cycle and can cause unpleasant symptoms upon waking, such as:
- Bruxism (teeth-grinding)
- Sore jaw, mouth, and teeth
- Feeling exhausted
- Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain
Sleep Apnea and Dentistry
Sleep apnea causes tooth pain, jaw pain, and sensitivity. This is because when people have the disorder, they grind their teeth, also known as Bruxism, overexerting the TMJ and wearing down their teeth, causing painful symptoms such as cracked or broken teeth, morning headaches, and more.
At Anders Dental, we work with you to provide the best treatment possible for your sleep apnea from the comfort of your home.
We review your results to provide personalized, safe dental treatments and ensure effective, patient-centered care. Additionally, results inform us if chelation is needed for optimum health. Chelation is a process where a substance that binds to mercury and other heavy metals is introduced into the body to act as a magnet to attract them and carry them out of the body, decreasing your metal toxicity load and improving your health.
Home Sleep Tests
A Home Sleep Test (HST) is the first step in determining the best course of treatment.
This take-home device monitors the movement of your jaw muscle movements to identify teeth grinding or clenching. It also includes a pulse oximeter that continuously tracks your oxygen levels and heart rate while you sleep.
Once we get your results, we check them to see if signs indicate sleep apnea. If they do, we connect you with a sleep doctor we routinely work with for diagnosis and treatment.
Nightguards are not a one-size-fits-all device. Used for various reasons, this device protects your teeth from Bruxism while you sleep and eases symptoms of TMJ disorders.
We create customized nightguards with you in mind.
Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD)
For mild forms of sleep apnea, all you may need is a device called MAD that shifts your jaw into a forward position while you sleep, expanding your airway so you can breathe better. Not only can these devices treat symptoms of sleep apnea, but they can alleviate other concerning symptoms, such as Bruxism.
