Loud, unfamiliar noises and bright lights are a few reasons patients avoid regular dental cleanings. However, regular checkups are crucial to oral health and overall well-being. Cleanings ensure you avoid painful dental problems that sometimes lead to expensive and lengthy treatments.
We practice a unique, mercury-free approach to dentistry, and have years of experience working with adults and children.
Fortunately, Anders Dental offers patients a personalized and holistic approach to dentistry. You can expect worry-free dentistry and predictable cleanings at our practice.
What Do Dental Cleanings Entail?
Ideally, you will visit your Black Mountain, NC, dentist twice a year or as recommended by Dr. Anders. You can expect the following at your checkup:
- Physical Exam
During your initial dental cleaning appointment with Anders Dental, you’ll meet with your dental hygienist to go over a few things before your cleaning begins, including:
- Your medical history
- A chance to ask any general questions
- Discuss your brushing and flossing habits
- Talk about your diet and lifestyle factors
- Mention concerns or symptoms you have
Even if you floss regularly, an expert flossing session is helpful.
Next, you’ll recline in the dental chair and have your teeth and gums looked at with a small mirror. This is a preliminary step to look for signs of tooth decay, obvious cavities, broken, loose or damaged teeth, and gingivitis or periodontal disease. If serious problems are found with your oral health, the dentist may be called to take a look and determine the next steps.
- Plaque and Tartar Removal
Afterward, the hygienist uses a scaler tool to remove plaque and tartar between the teeth and gums. Depending on the amount of build-up, this process could take a few minutes or up to 30 minutes or more. You will hear the build-up being removed, which can be unnerving, but rest assured, your teeth will not be damaged during this process, and it shouldn’t be painful.
- Deep Brushing and Polishing
Once your teeth are tartar free, your hygienist will use a high-powered electric polishing cup to brush your teeth. They will utilize a gritty, deeply penetrating, fluoride-free paste.
- Professional Flossing
Even if you floss regularly, an expert flossing session is helpful. The hygienist will get deep between your teeth, locating sensitive areas and assessing your gums for bleeding or sensitivity. Additionally, good flossing removes any residual residue left from your cleaning.
Finally, your mouth and teeth will be rinsed using an oral irrigator. Any excess water will be suctioned from your mouth, and remove any remaining toothpaste or plaque. This will leave your teeth clean and your mouth fresh!

What About Digital Dental X-rays?
Digital dental X-rays are critical to maintaining oral health. However, they are not generally performed every time for a dental cleaning.
Depending on your oral health, digital dental X-rays will be diagnosed based on your individual needs. They give your dentist a better idea of what is beneath the surface of your teeth and gums. Additionally, digital dental X-rays pinpoint deeper issues that need to be addressed, such as tooth abscesses, cysts, tumors, bone loss around your teeth, and impacted wisdom teeth.
Digital dental X-rays are safer than traditional dental X-rays, decreasing the emission of radiation by 75-80%. They are well-tolerated for all patients, including children, pregnant people, or those who may be immunocompromised.
